A simple project that your dog and park-goers alike will love. Bound to get compliments wherever you go, this personalised dog lead can be sewn up in an afternoon.
Note: this project is a little quicker and easier if you have the total length of fabric required (208cm for a big dog lead and 154cm for a small dog lead).
The finished size is 2.5cm wide x 176cm long for a big dog lead or 2cm wide x 122cm long for a small dog lead.
Sewing Instructions
Embroider the dog’s name on your fabric. Consider placement and leave space around the embroidery – at least 17cm at the end (after your embroidery) and 5cm above and below. See diagram 1 for exact positioning.
2. Cut your fabric:
a. For a small dog lead cut either one piece 8cm wide x 154cm long piece or two pieces 8cm wide x 83cm long. Your embroidery should be horizontal on the length of the lead, 17cm from the end, 2cm from the top and 4cm from the bottom – see diagram 1.
b. For a big dog lead cut either one piece 10cm wide x 208cm long or two pieces 10cm x 110cm long. Your embroidery should be horizontal on the length of the lead, 17cm from the end, 2.5cm from the top and 5cm from the bottom – see diagram 1.
c. If you have cut two pieces to join, cut the corner off each piece – see diagram 2. This will allow you to create a strong diagonal join.
3. If you have cut your lead in two sections, join pieces by putting right sides together with the ends of the triangles 1cm over edge (see photo). Pin and stitch with 1cm seam allowance. Press seams open and cut off extra fabric triangles at top and bottom.
4. Cut interfacing to the same size as your lead, this can be in sections if needed.
5. Iron on interfacing to the wrong side of your dog lead.
6. Place your lead lengthwise on an ironing board and fold the top and bottom sides into the middle so they meet, press. Fold in half again, enclosing raw edges, press.
7. Sew open side closed, .6cm from edge, using a Narrow Edge Foot.
9. Loop your clip onto the embroidery end of your lead and fold the end of your lead 2cm under, to the un-embroidered side, press.
10. Keeping the first fold underneath, fold again 5cm over, to the un-embroidered side. Pin or clip in place.
11. Sew this down with a square with a cross in the centre (see diagram 3 for detailed steps).
12. Fold the other end of your lead 2cm under, to the unembroidered side, and press
13. Keeping the fold underneath fold again 23cm over, to the un-embroidered side. Pin or clip in place.
14. Sew this down with a square with a cross in the centre (see diagram 3).
