The Maker Sweater. Easy Applique on the creative 3.0

I loved the last sweater I made so much, I decided to make another! This time using applique. I created a template with the word MAKER and a heart to applique onto the front of my sweater using canva. The pattern is a new release from the Lingerie society and includes the template so you can sew your own and let the world know you're a Maker!

You'll find the pattern here

The pattern is available in sizes 6 to 30 and requires just 1.3 metres of 160cm wide fabric for the main, up to a size 30

The fabric I chose for this make is a beautiful French terry from Belgian fabric house See you at six, available from Pitt Trading One of the things I love about see you at six, apart from the beautiful quality, is that they always have matching ribbing for their French terry, making it really easy to get that professional finish.

For my applique I used a selection of Liberty of London prints in lovely bright colours. This is a great project for using up those scraps you've got lying around of treasured fabrics you just can't bear to throw out! The letters take only a 10cm square of fabric each.

There is also some kits available for this project here if you'd prefer to get everything you need in one place.

For the applique on this project, I used Vliesofix, the appliquer's best friend! If you haven't used it before, it's a game changer. Essentially a double-sided adhesive, allowing you to heat set your applique design in place before you stitch. You can buy it here

I used the smallest standard zig-zag to stitch around my letters and heart, which worked well. You could also use a satin stitch or even a straight stitch and create that lovely frayed edge look.

I had a lot of fun making this sweater, and have worn it a few times since, and it's definitely a conversation starter!

I filmed a sew-along for this make, if you haven't tackled applique before it's a great place to start. You can check it out here

The sweater is a really quick, easy sew, with the added fun of the applique! I hope this inspires you to give it a go!

Until next time, happy sewing
