These beautiful hand-crafted fairy wings are the perfect gift for the little fairy lover in your life. They are a great weekend project, and you may just love them so much you go into mass production like I did! I made these for my twin’s birthday and loved the process so much I made a pair for each of their friends to take home from the party. A lovely keepsake from a magical fairy birthday.
Let’s get making!
Machine Requirements:
PFAFF Sewing Machine (I use the PFAFF creative 3.0)
PFAFF Universal Sewing Machine Needles
General Sewing Equipment
Requirements:
50cm of mid weight cotton fabric
50cm of heavy weight iron-on vilene
Matching thread
50cm of fusible Pellon
Water soluble marker
Scissors
PDF template and tracing vilene
Iron
2 metres soft elastic
Assorted flowers for decoration (optional)
Sewing Instructions:
Print your template. Fold the tracing vilene in half and trace the design with the centre of the wings on the fold of the fabric. Open out to form the pattern.
Lay your pattern piece on your fabric and cut one pair. Also cut one pair of your heavy weight vilene and one layer of pelon.
Fuse your vilene to the back of each wing piece. Also fuse the pelon to the back of one piece. Layer the wings, right sides together and pin in place.
Cut your soft elastic into two equal lengths and secure the ends at the centre top and centre bottom of the wings, this forms the straps.
Engage the IDT and stitch around the outside edge with a 1cm seam allowance, leaving a 10cm opening at the bottom of one wing.
Clip your seams well to facilitate easy turning and a smooth finish.
Turn right side out and press well. Make sure to neatly press the opening seam allowance in.
Increase the stitch length to 3.0 and move the needle position to 2.8. Using the outside edge of the foot as a guide, stitch around the outside of the wings, closing the opening as you sew.
Take a water-soluble marker and draw some design lines on to your wings. You can get creative here with any design you like, I’ve gone for simple swirls.
Stitch over your design lines using a 3mm straight stitch.
Take a damp cloth and wipe away your water-soluble marker and trim all your threads.
Add some flower embellishments to the centre of your wings. Take your flowers and petals and layer them down the middle of your wings. These can be stitched in place either on your machine or by hand, depending on what they are made from.
Your wings are finished!
These wings make beautiful gifts and a lovely keepsake for the little fairy lover in your life.
Until next time, happy sewing
